What are the virtues of a Catholic education? Cardinal John Henry Newman, the English theologian and author, wrote that “Faith operates by means of reason, and reason is directed and corrected by faith.”
Far from separating faith from intellectual inquiry, a Catholic education brings together the study of the liberal arts and sciences with a faith-based curriculum that emphasizes the Church’s social teaching. In our Catholic schools it is the dialogue between faith and reason that drives the development of students as young thinkers and citizens.
Francine Sider, a member of our parish who passed away in 2015, was a dedicated believer in the value of Catholic education. She attended Catholic schools as a young child and went on to teach mathematics at St. Mary School in Simsbury. Mrs. Sider was an initial trustee of the St. Mary School Endowment Fund Trust.
