All Saints’ Day is celebrated on November 1st every year. All Saints’ Day is a Holy Day of Obligation.
On this day, the Church calls us together to celebrate and honor those women, men and children who weren’t perfect people, but who strove passionately to love and serve God through prayer, courage and good works.
Therefore, all Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on All Saints’ Day, to recognize our heroes in faith, and to recommit to following their example of loving God with all one’s heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. (Mark 12:30-31)
All Saints’ Day was instituted by Pope Boniface IV in 609 when the Roman temple of the Pantheon in Rome was converted to a Church named the Basilica di Santa Maria ad Martyres Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs. Initially instituted in May, Pope Gregory IV moved the holy day to November two centuries later, in 837. Since then, Christians have celebrated All Saints’ Day on the first day of November.
Hallowe’en (All Hallows’ Eve) is celebrated the eve of All Saints Day (October 31). Long ago in Ireland and Britain, Christians would come together on All Hallows Eve to ask for God’s blessing and protection from the evil in the world. The source of the modern celebrations stemmed from the donning of saintly and evil spirit costumes to act out the battle between good and evil. (catholic.org)
